Becoming a mother has changed my life in profound ways.
As many of you moms out there can attest to, becoming a mom shakes our world in so many ways. I’m not talking about just the obvious, either.
Yes, our bodies go through some miraculous changes to grow and nourish our child(ren). Yes, our day to day routines and “normal” life is turned upside down. However, in my experience, something bigger has happened. Becoming a mother has shifted my soul. It has fundamentally altered who I am and how I view and approach life.
Experiencing this profound of a shift was not something that I anticipated. I didn’t know all that was to come and I have had plenty of moments where I wondered how I didn’t realize that Every. Single. Piece. of my life would look and feel different.
There is so much good in these changes. But there is also a tremendous (and sometimes overwhelming) amount of challenge and isolation in navigating one of the biggest transitional experiences we have as women.
It has been through my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences that I have realized who I want to serve. I have become passionate about helping moms navigate this transition with as much ease and grace as possible and, perhaps most importantly, with an abundance of support.
I have spent a great deal of time growing in my own strength and determination working to figure out HOW I could best do this. What way can I have the greatest impact? How can I best offer support to expecting and new mothers?
As a result of this searching and some trial and error I have decided that I will be adding postpartum occupational therapy services as my primary service offering here at I Love Me.
Now you may be wondering 1- what the heck is occupational therapy? And 2- how could occupational therapy help me as a postpartum mom?
Well, keep reading mama! I’ve got some great things I can offer you.
Occupational therapists (that’s me!) take a holistic approach in our care. We focus on looking at what each person needs to do everything in their life that they want and need to do to care for themselves and their families (while living a full and meaningful life).
Occupational therapy helps people to successfully participate in all areas of their life (i.e. their roles within the home, at work, in the community, etc.) and addresses the physical, psychological, and cognitive aspects of their well-being.
So, how can this help you as a postpartum mom? A few areas that OT can offer support and solutions are:
- Planning (and implementing that plan!) for the postpartum period – aka the Fourth Trimester
- Pain Management
- Fatigue Management
- Navigating Change and Transition
- Coping Skills
- Pelvic Health
- Emotional Support
- Mental Health (postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety)
- Safe Return to Movement and Exercise
- Ergonomics/ Body Mechanics
- Plus, whatever else YOU need as you move through this transition.
